Enmore got its name from Enmore House, which was constructed in 1835 by British East India Company master mariner Captain Sylvester Browne. Browne named his home after a business associate’s estate in Guyana, the leader of James Cavan & Co., which got its name from Enmore in Somerset, England. Under the pen name Rolf Boldrewood, Browne’s son wrote a number of Australian classics, including Robbery Under Arms.

A report of snowfall in the suburb dates back to 1836. T, the weather observer. According to A. Browne, “the years 1836, 1837 and 1838 were years of drought, and in one of these years [1836] a remarkable thing happened. There was a fall of snow; we made snowballs at Enmore and enjoyed the usual schoolboy amusements therewith”.
