Bondi Junction is home to the famous Westfield Bondi Junction. This is one of the largest malls in Australia and is home to many Australian designer labels, Myer, David Jones etc. Fortunately, Bondi Junction is not only about its mall.

There are plenty of businesses located outside the mall on the Oxford Street end. Cafes, restaurants, beauty salons are conveniently located along Oxford Street. On the weekends, Oxford Street pedestrian mall plays host to the Bondi Junction Markets. You can find collectibles, fresh produce, jewellery and plenty more at the Bondi Junction Markets.

Bondi Junction History

The Aboriginal term “bondi” means “water breaking over rocks.” Over time, it has been spelled in a variety of ways, including Boondi, Bundi, and Bundye.

Built by Barnett Levey in 1827 on what is now Waverley Street, Waverley House was the first dwelling in the region. Before being finally demolished in 1904, the mansion had numerous changes of ownership over the years. Waverley House served as the inspiration for the name of the newly established Waverley Municipality in 1859.

In 1832, Henry Hough received the first land grant on the Bondi Junction site. He constructed a wind-powered flour mill on his land. The primary road in the suburb, South Head Road (now Oxford Street), led off a track that provided access to this.
