Stanmore

Stanmore is quiet but is within walking distance of Norton St, Leichhardt and two or three minutes drive from Glebe Point Rd and King St, Newtown. Train links are excellent and Stanmore is only 7 minutes by rail to Town Hall and 15 minutes to Bondi Junction and North Sydney.

Location

It has one of the highest percentages of professional people in Sydney, due to its proximity to RPA, University of Sydney, UTS and the city.

Mainly doctors, university staff, media and business people. Stanmore Village is small but very liveable with several trendy cafes, a patisserie, architect and legal offices. Many students live here, too, because of the proximity to University of Sydney, UTS and Notre Dame.

Stanmore History

The Gadigal clan of the Eora people, coastal aborigines, inhabited the area before the British arrived. Between 1793 and 1810, Governor Arthur Phillip initially gave colonial officers land in the current Stanmore area.

John Jones, a saddler, named Stanmore for himself when he established on the present-day site of Newington College in 1835 and dubbed it the Stanmore Estate. Jones gave it the name Stanmore, after the north-west London area where he was born.
