Bondi Beach History

Originally from Australia, “Bondi” was an Aboriginal term that meant “surf” in English. Australians of European descent first documented “bondi” between 1899 and 1903. The meaning is defined as “noise made by sea waves breaking on the beach,” which is very much how modern American English defines “surf.” According to records kept by the Australian Museum, Bondi refers to the location of a fight involving bondi sticks, also known as fighting sticks or nulla nullas.
